Clay McDonald Gustaves, known to many as Clayburn, passed away Jan. 5 at the McCall Rehab and Care Center from complications of heart failure and cancer.

The second of three children, Clay was born to Don and Virginia Gustaves in Boise.   He grew up in Boise, graduating from Boise High.  Clay served several years in the National Guard.  He married Kristie Parish in 1970 and they moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, building a home.  Jason was born while they lived in Alaska.  Moving back to Idaho, Clay began hauling logs, and Amy was born.  Clay and Kristie later divorced.  He returned to Alaska in the 1980s to haul materials and methanol to Prudhoe Bay.  Again returning to Idaho, Clay hauled logs in Western Idaho until he retired in 2013.

Preceded in death by his parents and older brother Gary, Clay is survived by his sister D’on Waltermire, son Jason (Jennifer) Gustaves, daughter Amy (Travis) Lake, son Michael Gustaves, and eight grandchildren.

Clay was fiercely independent and loyal to his friends and family.  His sense of humor and wit endeared him to many friends.  In his last years his friends in the Cascade valley helped him immensely, something he was very grateful for.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise.
