John W. Hicks, born Sept. 28, 1943, lost his battle as he fought to recover from a severe fall July of 2024. John spent 4 months in McCall Rehab and Care Center and on December 5th, 2025 made his way into God’s loving arms.

John served his country from 1964-1968 in the Army and was stationed in Germany and Japan during the Vietnam era.

John worked for several phone companies in Colusa CA. He also served as Mayor of Colusa CA for 3 terms. John volunteered for many years at Colusa County Fairgrounds taking care of lighting and sound systems. He also volunteered at Colusa Stagehands as lighting and sound systems technician during plays. John spent many years as a wildlife rehabber working closely with Fish and Game, taking care of many wild animals including foxes, eagles, birds of all kinds, beavers, and many others.

After moving to McCall full-time in 2004, John, started a local company called Home Automation and Electronics. He wired many buildings for low voltage, among them Idaho 1st Bank, and Alpine Village, and worked in many homes throughout Valley County. John served on McCall Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and in 2007 co-chaired with his wife McCall Winter Carnival “Wonders of the World”. John also volunteered from 2009 – 2018 at Manchester Ice and Event Center helping with lighting and sound systems for the Idaho Jr. Steelheads, and Idaho Icecats. Also during this time he and his wife billeted many of players in their home in McCall, many of the boys had a very strong bond with John. He loved having the boys, cooking for them and transporting them while they were in his home.

John loved snowmobiling and served on the McCall Snowmobilers Board of Directors. He also worked with Valley County Auditor on the Valley Grooming Program, he prepared the budget for all areas of snowmobiling in Valley County. John also volunteered to help with McCall Adopt-a-trail program. John loved ATV riding, camping and fishing, loved living in Valley County doing all the things he loved.

John was preceded in death by his father Eugene D. Hicks, and mother Eva R. Hicks.

John is survived by his wife Shirley Hicks, daughters Melissa Daniels, Georgene Hicks, and Shirley Rosales, Son-in-law Rick Esparza. 7 Grandchildren, Jasmine Chargualaf, Nathan Lyss,Hailey Lyss, Giani Daniels, Damian Castillo, Johnathan Garcia, and Kyla Esparza, 3 Great-Grandchildren, Kahlia Castillo, Kaleb Castillo, Dominic Corchado, and one soon to be born Riley Castillo.

There will be a Celebration of Life in the Spring, and notice will be sent out.
