When their hearts and bodies were no longer able to sustain life, Mom and Dad left on Angel Wings Tuesday, April 14, 2015, and Friday, April 17, 2015, respectively.
Dad was born October 30, 1922, to Quartus Sparks Catlin and Sarah Jane Jones Catlin in Oakley, Idaho.  Dad was the ninth of eleven living children.  He spoke fondly of growing up in a large family and life on a ranch; helping other ranchers and families with chores.  Dad attended and graduated from school in Oakley.  Following school he enlisted in the Army where he became a paratrooper.  He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater; jumping onto Corregidor and other locations.  Following the service he attended the University of Idaho for a short time, studying Forestry.  During this time he became a Smokejumper, based in McCall.
Mom was born October 10, 1927, to Charles Joseph Smith and Florence Jerusha Gerrard Smith, in Oakley, Idaho.  Mom was the second of four living children.  She grew up on the family homestead helping with farm chores and cooking for threshing crews.  She attended and graduated from Oakley schools.  She began her working career with Idaho Power and Cassia National Bank in Burley.
Mom and Dad began their life together on December 24, 1948, in Oakley.  For the first couple of years they lived in McCall where Dad was a Smokejumper during the summer and wintered in Burley and Oakley.  When Dad was hired full-time with the Forest Service in McCall, they established their permanent home in McCall.
Dad retired from the Forest Service in 1977 completing 25 years of working with the Smokejumpers.  He immediately went to work managing the Hollenbeak ranch.  Managing the ranch was his dream come true; ranch life without the responsibility of ownership.  He continued to manage the ranch for another 30 years, for Loren Hollenbeak and John Carey, until it began developing into Jug Mountain Estates and Golf Course.
Between, and following, the births of three daughters, Mom worked at Idaho First National Bank and for the City of McCall in several departments, retiring in 1985.  She enjoyed meeting people and providing valuable services. She would cook and take Dad dinners when he was on call at the Smokejumper base and sometimes out to the Ranch when Dad was changing sprinklers or waiting for cattle.  She became well known for her wonderful homemade rolls and pies.  Before losing her eyesight she enjoyed many crafts including sewing some of our clothes when we were young.
Mom and Dad were active in the community and served in several capacities.  They were active in Ski Patrol on both ski hills, became EMTs and ambulance drivers, served as officers for the VFW and Auxiliary; Dad served on the boards of the McCall and New Meadows Senior Centers where Mom assisted wherever she was needed. Dad also served on the McCall Community Hospital Board and the Selective Service Board.  Mom helped with the American Cancer Society for many years.  Both enjoyed playing bridge with different groups, gardening, hunting trips to the back country and life in general in McCall.
Mom and Dad are survived by three daughters; Nadine Jobe (Ron Krauss), Cyndie (Monte) Bollar, and Tawna Snider;  grandchildren, Chris Jobe and Pattie Bell, Paul Jobe, Amy and Nick Decker, Ryan and Michelle Bollar, Sara and David Blake, and Jason Snider; five great grandsons plus a new great grandbaby due in October.  Dad is also survived by two sisters; Elsie Bales and Ora Harris and Mom is survived by her sister Shirley Reid.
The family would like to extend special thank yous to Chris Jobe and Pattie Bell who lived with, and cared for, Grandma and Grandpa for the last five years and added extra sparkle to their days; our special helpers and caregivers Mary Sardenga, Patty Miller, Jacqui Santoro, Dr. Sarah Curtain and the staff at the Payette Medical Clinic, the doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s Hospital McCall, the St. Luke’s Hospice Team, and Trinity Home Health.
They say it takes a village to raise a child; it also takes a very special village to care for the elderly and make it possible to keep them in their own home.  Thank you everyone who helped us on this journey that made it possible for Mom and Dad to remain in their home to the end.
A viewing will be held the evening of Friday, May 1, 2015, 7-9 PM, at Heikkila Funeral Chapel in McCall.  A combined service will be held Saturday, May 2, 2015, 11 AM, at the Finn Church, southeast of McCall.  Burial will follow at the Finn Cemetery.   A reception will follow at the LDS Church in McCall.
