Richard Dwight Burden
Richard D. Burden, age 73, passed away June 18, 2026, near McCall, Idaho.
Rick was born to Ceb and Edith Burden on January 6, 1953, in West Plains, Missouri. In 1958, the family, including Rick's four siblings, headed west and put down roots on a farm outside of Rupert, Idaho. After growing up on the farm and graduating from Minidoka High School, he found his calling working in the woods — forging a bond with natural materials that would shape the rest of his life.
In the early 1980s, Rick and his wife Denise Felton settled on the Olympic Peninsula. They raised four children on the Quillayute Prairie, just outside Forks, Washington. In 1990, Rick embarked on a new chapter with Karen Hobbs. They married, merged their families and made their home in Meadows Valley, Idaho.
Rick kept his hands busy and his mind busier. He built a large wood shop and opened Generation Woodworking, crafting furniture, doors, and fine woodworking pieces that bore his unmistakable care. Alongside Karen and her mother Marjorie, he then opened Beyond the Trees, an antique store and soda fountain. Next came the Sagebrush BBQ, which brought Texas-style barbecue to the valley and became a local institution for over a decade.
After their years in the restaurant business, Rick and Karen worked for the Collett Flying Diamond farm and Vance Dairy Construction, and served as caretakers of Burgdorf Hot Springs, before relocating to the Treasure Valley. Rick’s sense of adventure eventually carried them to Costa Rica, where they purchased a mountainside property with established coffee crops and fruit trees. There, they expanded a pair of small cottages into a sprawling estate and cultivated the surrounding grounds into a lush tropical garden. In recent years, Rick and Karen returned to Boise to be close to family and friends, though Rick continued making trips back to Costa Rica whenever the itch needed scratching.
Rick was self-taught in nearly everything: woodworking, guitar, coffee growing, opening and running a restaurant. Most recently, he converted a Sprinter van into a camper, leaving his artistic touch all along the way. Rick approached each new endeavor with the quiet confidence of a man who trusted his own two hands above all else. The Leatherman that lived so many years on his belt wasn't just a tool. It was a philosophy.
Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Cebert and Edith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his siblings Donna (Ron), Joe (Sandy), Terry (Rocky), and Betty (Steve); his children Tobias, Jessica, Levi (Shannon), Chad (Michiko), and Sam (Mary); his grandchildren Trevor, David, Jesse, Logan, Tristan, Phoenix, Mika, Evelyn, and Yuzu; his great-grandchildren Macrae and Luella; and several others he carried in his heart.
The family is planning a celebration of life to be held in August.
