Curtis "The Captain" Smith Obituary

Curtis A. Smith, “The Captain”, of New Meadows, Idaho passed away peacefully in McCall, Idaho on March 31, 2023.

“The Captain” was born November 10, 1931 in Los Angeles, California.  Upon graduating from high school he moved to Sun Valley, Idaho and worked at the Sun Valley Lodge which was owned by the Union Pacific Railroad. While he later served for the U.S. Army as a paratrooper, he fell in love with flying planes. After his service he attended and graduated from the Emery-Riddle flight school in Miami, Florida. His aviation career began as he then came “full circle” with the Union Pacific Railroad and became their Chief Pilot. He retired after a magnificent 40-year career of flying for them.

Curt married the love of his life, Jamie, in Bermuda on May 29, 1987. After their marriage they lived on their beloved sailboat and worked together before retiring to Meadow Creek Golf Resort in 2002. They shared over 40 years of love, friendship and adventure. They truly loved their golf and skiing life in the mountains, not to mention all of their many, many friends.

“The Captain” is survived by his beloved wife, Jamie, sons Doug (Kim), Kirk (Katia), daughter Karen Mancuso (Jim), sister Nancy Kirk, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and his many friends.

“Long live the Captain’s awesome memory! He was a legend to many who knew him and foundation of our family. I hope he’s flying through the clouds, sailing in the breeze or floating through some powder turns today!”
