Stephen Mills Mehen

Stephen Mills Mehen “Steve” passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021 surrounded by his family in McCall, Idaho.

Steve was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 15, 1939 to Frances and Henry O’Brien Mehen. He found a love for horses at a young age that he carried with him his entire life. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a Masters degree in Ruminant Nutrition. Steve met and fell in love with Josephine Beth Conroy (JoBeth) and they were married on April 17, 1971 at Brophy Chapel in Phoenix, AZ. They have two sons, Sean Conroy and Rory O’Brien. Steve settled with his family in Idaho in 1980.

During his life, Steve was self-employed as a cattle rancher, animal nutritionist, and was owner and operator of The Hartland Inn in New Meadows for 26 years.

Steve had a life-long passion for creating wood carvings, sculptures and artwork; he even wrote a few songs and books. His love of horses shines through in much of his art. Recently during his retirement, he enjoyed working in his shop making various woodworks, painting and going on his daily walks. He was always busy with projects and creating inventions.  Steve’s dad always said that Steve could wake up in the morning with nothing to do and still not get everything done by the end of the day.

Steve was a devoted husband and father and loved his family deeply. He was a charismatic, creative and honest man. He spoke his mind and could throw out some of the best one-liners you’ve ever heard.

Steve is survived by his wife of 50 years, JoBeth, sons Sean Conroy (Kim, spouse) and Rory O’Brien (Sara, spouse) along with numerous friends and family. Steve is preceded in death by his mother Frances, father Henry O’Brien, and brothers James and Thomas. He will be “whippin’ and spurrin’” to meet his family once again in heaven.

Steve, you will be missed tremendously by your family and all who knew you.

Funeral services will held Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 3 pm at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 501 Cross Road, McCall, Idaho.
